TEACHER & PRACTITIONER INTEREST AREAS
Addiction, Health Practitioners, Mantras & Naad, (Sound Current Healing) Meditation, Mental Health, TeachesThe African Roots of Kundalini Yoga & The Yoga of Intersectionality (Intersectional / Force multiplying systems of discrimination: Sex, Race, Class, Ability, Gender Expression) Swami Turiyasangitananda Alice Coltrane, one of my musical healing mentors, once said “Anger Burns, Meditation Heals”. How do you heal yourself when mainstream medicine ooes not recognize sexism and racism exist as emotional drivers. African based Spirituality, Science, Music, Art, Meditation, and Yoga, offer solutions to cope with daily existence.
As an addictions practitioner for four decades, who was never clinically addicted, incarcerated, defined as a “normie” (non-Addict / Alcoholic in 12 Step terms). As a “Black Science Nerd” I was recruited as a trainer by the State of Oregon, because of my interests in psychopharmacology, neurochemistry, racial microaggressions , and the scientifically skilled responses to them microresistance. Black Science recognizes that systems of discrimination exist, and can be systematically neutralized. An addicted population, is a controlled population. Major portions of the American and global economies, depend on the promotion of addictive products. Just as literacy among slaves was discouraged, social and pharmacological literacy is not encouraged either.Addction is Slavery.
I identify as a “Maroon, not in Recovery, but at war.” The Coromanti maroons of Jamaica, raided slave plantations to free their their relatives. Maroons in the continental United States did the same in the American South, making cross-racial alliances and free societies. Alcohol and drugs have been used as weapons of war against, Native-American, and African-American populations. The war has not ended. Many traditional community based efforts to resist addiction have been destroyed, and non-scientific, non-effective methods promoted. Early mainstream mental health practitioners felt that African slaves and white women, were mentally ill for seeking freedom and equality. Meanwhile health disparities, and effective and accessible mental health treatment remain elusive among communities of color, and other diverse communities. There are solutions beyond the traditional responses.
How do you build a sustainable non-addictive, non-discriminatory, Recovery Culture, or Culture of Recovery?
